Thaipusam
Thaipusam is a festival celebrated by the Hindu community from Jan 31 to Feb 3. In Hinduism, Lord Murugan is the god of war, victory, and wisdom. In general, the Tamil people are devoted to Lord Murugan. Every year, the male devotees celebrate this festival by piercing their bodies to seek blessings and commemorate the victory of the Hindu god Murugan. Additionally, the female devotees carry milk pots (paal kudam) on their heads during Thaipusam to honor Lord Murugan.
In 2026, the Thaiapusam festival is observed on the full moon in the Tamil month of Thai (January/February), usually coinciding with the Pusam star. Thaiapusam Day falls on 1st February, a Sunday. Murugan, the god of the Tamils, was worshiped in five types of land in ancient times and was considered the land deity.
Thaipusam Mythological History Facts
The demon Soorapadman, along with his brother, tortured the Devas (gods) and caused chaos across the cosmos, symbolizing greed, rage, and pride. Murugan received the Vel, an unbeatable spear, from Goddess Parvati. On the day of Thaipusam, Lord Murugan slaughtered the demon Soorapadman by using the Vel to split him in two, which thereafter transformed into a rooster (his flag) and a peacock (his mount).
